Abbreviations

US Terminology used

  • ch(s) – chain(s)
  • dc – double crochet
  • DMR – double magic ring
  • fl – front loop
  • FPsc – front post single crochet
  • g – grams
  • m – meters
  • oz – ounces
  • rem – remaining
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd – round
  • RS – right side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip/skipped
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • Xdc – crossed double crochet
  • yds – yards
  • * to ** – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
  • [ ] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
  • ( ) – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space

Special Stitches

Crossed double crochet (Xdc): this stitch is worked over 2 sts: skip the next st, 1 dc in the next st, now go back to the skipped st and work 1 dc – this creates an “X” or, a Crossed Double Crochet Stitch.

  • The initial crossed double crochet of each round will still be counted as a Xdc in the stitch count at the end of the round. To make the initial Xdc, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) and make 1 dc in the last st of the last round.

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • You may substitute your favorite method for starting in rounds for the DMR (double magic ring) if you prefer.
  • Initial ch 3 counts as a stitch and we work into it.
  • Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join.
  • You can make your slip stitches tightly as we will not be working into them.
  • If you’d like to increase the hat height, work more repeat rounds.
  • To decrease the hat height, work less repeat rounds. Every 2 rounds you omit will decrease the hat height by 1 inch.
  • Photo tutorial follows pattern.

  1. Hi Pauline, Yes there is a printer icon with the word print beside it at the beginning of every post on my site. When you click it it opens a new window (if you have pop ups blocked you will need to manually allow the pop-up once – a notification should show up in the browser bar on the right-side). I pay for a service to create PDFs of my posts for my readers – the service allows you to click on things in the version that is created to delete sections so you can control what parts of the instructions you need – for example if you only need one size of the pattern, you can delete everything beyond that one section – and control the finished size of the print-out you make 🙂 You can even remove images and change the size of the fonts 🙂 You don’t need to print or save the entire pattern – just the part you need. Hope this helps! Rhondda

  2. Hi Rhondda Mol,
I’m having the hardest time trying to download your patterns. You said to go to the print icon at the top of the page. There were no print icon. When I finally figured it out, I had to print 27 pages. I love your hat patterns.
