About the Holiday Spirit Headband
This headband is very simple to crochet. You’ll work it flat, seam the ends together, and then add the knot separately once the base is complete.
What you’ll need:
- 2 colors of medium weight yarn (I used yarn from my stash)
- 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook
The stitch pattern used is the houndstooth stitch, worked in multiples of 2. If you’d like extra help, you can follow along with my [Houndstooth Crochet Stitch Photo Tutorial]. It’s easy to adjust the size—add more rows to increase the height or chain more (in multiples of 2) to change the length. Each extra inch of height will take about two more rows.
You can also have fun with color choices! Try a classic black and white houndstooth for a timeless look, or switch it up for seasonal projects—orange and black for Halloween, green and white for St. Patrick’s Day, or even red and white for Canada Day.
If you prefer a simpler version, skip the knot and cinched section entirely. Just whipstitch the long edges together and you’ll have a neat, cozy earwarmer. For the best finish, leave a long tail of each color so you can seam the edges seamlessly.

Notes
- This project is worked in rows and then seamed to form the headband
- Change yarn colors on the last yarn over of the last stitch of each row.
- After changing colors, I did not carry my yarn for this project I finished it off at the end of the rows and wove in the ends.
- I do not recommend working over the other color yarn because it will decrease the elasticity you need for the headband to fit on the head.
- The Knot is optional. You can seam this as a straight headband if you prefer.

Holiday Houndstooth Headband Tutorial

- Headband: You will be making both side edges (left and right) narrower by cinching each edge and pulling tightly.
- Insert the needle through the edge like in image 2, repeat across in the opposite direction and pull tightly.
- Repeat across in the opposite direction and pull tightly.
- Bring the other edge up beside the first cinched end and repeat the method to make it narrower as well.
- Whipstitch the bottom and top of the edges closed, finish off and weave in ends.
- Knot: Cinch the ends (by weaving through the side edges) to make them narrower on each side of the knot.
- Shows the narrowed edges.
- Wrap the knot around the narrow section of the headband and whipstitch the two cinched ends together securely. Finish off and weave in ends. The cinched part is worn on the inside of the headband so you may need to twist it into place so the seam is not showing.
