Special Stitches

Popcorn (PC)

Helpful Tutorial

Notes:

  • There should be no spaces between your stitches – use a smaller hook size if you see gaps between your stitches.
  • Colors: MC (gray), CC (white), CC1 (pink) and CC2 (black)
  • You can use your favorite joining method instead of the standing single crochet join if you prefer.
  • You can use your favorite starting method instead of the DMR. Be sure to tighten R1 completely before proceeding to ensure the size stays consistent.
  • Since this is a no-sew project the ears and feet are added in specific stitches so it is very important to keep track of your spot as you work. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of the round and move the stitch marker as you work to the first stitch of each round that follows.
  • We do not slip stitch to join or chain 1 at the end of the rounds (unless specified). We work in continuous rounds.
  • Push any yarn ends inside the body of the Possum as you work.
  • When weaving in your yarn ends, weave the end through the body, tie a knot in the yarn end, then weave it back through the same hole you exited the body from and back into the poly-fil inside the body.
  • Extra photos follow the pattern.

Stuff the possum with Poly-fil or your favorite amigurumi stuffing material. Do not overstuff.

Rnd 31: Sc2tog around. Finish off leaving an 8-inch yarn tail to close. [10 sc]

Finishing Instructions for the Possum Body:

Place the yarn end on a sewing needle and weave it through the front loop of each of the last 10 sts in Rnd 31. Pull to tighten. Weave the end under the stitches in the opposite direction so it stays snug and into the body of the possum.and out through the side. Tie a knot and weave the yarn end back into the body of the possum.

The Possum Tail

Place your possum on a flat surface and find the middle stitch (between the eyes) and follow this in a straight line to the back of the possum’s body. We will join the CC1 (pink) yarn around the post of the center stitch (approximately) using a slip stitch. For my possum this stitch was located in Rnd 29.

Using your 6 mm (J) crochet hook and CC1 (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 20, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in each rem ch across., ch 1, turn. [19 sc]

R2: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [19 sc]

R3: Working through each st in R2 and the corresponding chain stitch from R1, make 1 sl st in each across. This will seam the 2 edges of the tail together. [19 sl st]

Sl st to the same post as you joined to and weave in your ends (in the same manner as you did for the Possum body).
