  • Sizes: Approximately 8 inches tall; finished angel stands on its own
  • Yarn: Red Heart With Love, Medium Worsted Weight [4]
  • Crochet Hook: 4 mm (G)
  • Crochet Stitches and Techniques: Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, center half double crochet

    • Quick project that takes less than 90 minutes to finish
    • Durable yarn choice makes the angel sturdy without stiffening
    • Perfect gift idea for Yarnsgiving, holidays, or any special occasion

The Yarn

I used Red Heart With Love, a Medium Worsted Weight yarn [4], for this angel. Red Heart Super Saver in the same weight also works well. Both are sturdy yarns that help my Angels stand on their own without stiffening. You can find both yarns @yarnspirations.

Supplies

  • Yarn Used: Red Heart with Love. 198 g (7 oz) and 370 yds (338 m). Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4]. 100% Acrylic. Machine washable and dryable.
  • Yarn option 2: Red Heart Super Saver. 198 g (7 oz) and 364 yds (333 meters). Medium Aran Weight Yarn [4]. 100% acrylic. Machine washable and dryable.
  • Color: Soft White (E300B.0316)
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G) was used for the entire project
  • Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker and a small amount of Poly-Fil or scraps of white yarn to stuff the head, Handmade Mini Heart Petal Roses
  • Finished Project Yardage: Crochet Angel: 50g (0.53 oz) and 33.5 yds (30.6 m)
  • HALO: Bowdabra Bow Wire – Color Silver (I used the 4 mm hook)

Difficulty Level

  • EASY-INTERMEDIATE

Finished Size

  • 8 inches tall (not including the halo), 5.5 inches wide when flattened on a hard surface.

Gauge

Not imperative but if your stitches have spaces between them that you can see through you need to go down a hook size (or two) until you are crocheting a more solid fabric.

  • For the bodice my gauge is 5 sts per inch and 5 rows per inch.
  • For the skirt I have 6 sts in 2 inches and 7 rows in 2 inches.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Special Stitch

Center Half Double Crochet (chdc)

The center half double crochet stitch is crocheted just like a regular hdc except for one difference. Instead of working under the top loops (front loop and back loop) of the stitch, you work between the legs of the stitch, in the center of the stitch.

For the first round of chdc you will be working into sc (single crochet) stitches (see image below):

For the rest of the rounds of chdc (center half double crochet) you will be working into the center of the chdc stitches around. You work beneath the horizontal bar and between the legs of the stitch (see image below):

Notes

  • This project is worked in continuous rounds.
  • You will need to use a stitch marker to keep track of your place.
  • Do not slip stitch to join at the end of rounds unless specified.
  • When a slip stitch is used to join at the end of a round, make the slip stitch tightly.
  • When you work the sc2tog decreases work under the front loop only (it makes the decrease stitch less thick).
  • Ch 1 at the end of the round does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • Do not work into slip stitches unless specified.

Thinking of You Crochet Angel Pattern

This project is crocheted from the top of the Angel’s head down to the base of the skirt, in one-piece. The wings, arm and halo are crocheted separately.

Using your 4 mm (G) hook (or size required for gauge):

Angel Head

Begin by crocheting the head. This section forms the foundation for your angel and is worked in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in a DMR. [6 sc]

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. [12 sc]

Rnd 3: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]

Rnd 4: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [24 sc]

Rnd 5-Rnd 7: 1 sc in each st around. [24 sc]

Rnd 8: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]

Rnd 9: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [12 sc]

Fill the head with Poly-Fil but do not overstuff.

Rnd 10: Sc2tog around. [6 sc]

Angel Upper Body

Continue shaping the angel’s upper body. This part connects directly to the head and creates the shoulders and chest area.

Rnd 11: 1 FPsc in each st around. [6 FPsc]

Rnd 12: 2 FPsc in each st around. [12 FPsc]

Rnd 13: 1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [14 sc]

Rnd 14: 1 sc in each st around. [14 sc]

Rnd 15: 1 sc in the first st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [10 sc, 2 ch3sp]

Rnd 16: 1 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts [16 sc]

Rnd 17: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [20 sc]

Rnd 18-Rnd 21: 1 sc in each st around. [20 sc]

Rnd 22: 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [20 sc]

Angel Skirt

The skirt is worked next to form the flowing lower half of the angel. It’s crocheted in rounds and creates the classic standing shape.

Rnd 23: *2 chdc in the next st, 1 chdc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [25 chdc]

Rnd 24: *2 chdc in the next st, 1 chdc in each of the next 4 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [30 chdc]

Rnd 25-Rnd 35: 1 chdc in each st around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [30 chdc]

Finish off and set aside until you have completed the arm, wings and halo.

Angel Arms

The arms are crocheted as a single piece and gently fed through the shoulder opening of the dress. This simple step gives your angel a natural, seamless look — no sewing required.

Make 1.

The arm is created in one piece; worked flat in rows and then seamed on the long edges with a slip stitch seam.

R1: Ch 31, beg in 2nd ch from hook and work 1 sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [30 sc]

R2: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [30 sc]

Now we will fold the rectangle in half lengthwise and seam the long edges together using a slip stitch seam (see R3). Line up the stitches so you can work through both the rem loop of the foundation ch and the stitches of R2.

R3: 1 sl st in each st across. Finish off. [30 sl st]

Angel Wings

The wings are made separately and attached to the back of the angel. They add texture and give your project a light, airy look.

Make 2.

R1: Ch 14, beg in 2nd ch from hook and work 1 sl st in each ch across, ch 1, turn. [13 sl st]

R2: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across to the last st. Sk the last st, ch 2, turn. [12 sl st ]

R3: 1 sl st in the BL of each st across, ch 1, turn. [12 sl st]

R4-R19: Rep R2 and R3

Now we will create the wing shape. Working in the spaces between the rows and in the base of the first foundation chain (R1), sc10tog.

Angel Halo

The halo is quick to make and adds a simple, elegant finish to your angel. It’s attached after the wings are in place.

Created using a 4 mm (G) crochet hook and Gold Bowdabra Bow Wire.

What is Bowdabra Bow Wire? This is a thin piece of wire wrapped in gold metallic thread. I found mine at Michael’s in the ribbon section. It can stand on its own which is why I like it – and it is much thinner than pipe-cleaner (which was what I had been considering).

R1: Ch 20, finish off leaving a short 2-3 inch tail of the bow wire.

  • Now take the tail (at the end of the chain 20) and thread it through the 7th chain you made.
  • This will create the halo loop.
  • Now twist (like a twist-tie) the two remaining ends together to make it straight and stiff.
  • Take that one end (since you twisted them together you have one wire now) and thread it through the back of the angel’s head and down to the base of the neck before cutting off any of the excess wire.
  • If you want to dab a bit of fabric glue in there to keep it in place you can.

Assembly and Finishing Instructions

In this final step, weave in the yarn ends neatly and adjust the shape so your angel stands evenly. Position the arms and wings, then add the halo to complete your Thinking of You Angel.

  • Weave in any remaining ends securely.
  • Insert the arm through the holes on each side of the dress.
  • Insert the halo through the back stitches of the head.

When your angel is complete, there are a few simple ways to customize it for gifting or display.

Extra Options

Try one or more of these simple ideas to customize your angel or turn it into a decoration or keepsake.

  • Easily stitch the hands together to make your angel ‘pray’ or give her something to hold in her hands.
  • Add embroidery, glitter, or flowers (your own personal touches).
  • Decorate with glitter, bells or sequins or place a tea light under her skirt (or a bell) and add a hanging tie to make her a Christmas Tree ornament.
  • Add hair to her head if you’d like!
  • Stitch a bell under her skirt, or add a ribbon to her back (above her wings) to make her an ornament for your tree.
  • Add a handmade paper (or plastic) cone under her skirt to help her stay in shape on the top of your Christmas Tree.

Your Thinking of You Angel is now complete. This thoughtful handmade design makes a lovely gift or decoration and serves as a gentle reminder of kindness, comfort, and care.

    Thinking of You Angel.
It’s a treat to find a pattern such as this angel. It’s very well written, easy to follow and makes for a nice quick little project, that takes very little yarn as well. I followed Rhondda’s pattern to a tee, except I wanted to add a little bit of stuffing so I added a bottom to her to hold the stuffing in.
    Brenda A.M.

Crocheting an angel is a simple yet meaningful way to brighten someone’s day. I hope this pattern inspires you to share handmade kindness during #Yarnsgiving and beyond. Pick up your hook, your favorite yarn, and enjoy creating a heartfelt gift for someone special.

Happy crocheting!
