You can always change your color on the last yarn over of the stitch you are completing – unless a pattern indicates otherwise. This easy method will make changing yarn colors, or replacing your yarn (when you run out) a quick and easy process! Follow my step-by-step changing yarn colors crochet tutorial to learn the basics! Then you can easily change colors using any crochet stitch, on the last yarn over!

Changing Yarn Colors Crochet Tutorial

Changing yarn colors when working a single crochet stitch:

  • insert hook into the st indicated, yarn over hook, pull up 1 loop. Now drop the color of yarn you are working with and pick up the new color of yarn: yarn over the hook, and pull through the 2 loops on your hook

The above information can be applied to any stitch; just complete the stitch as normal but on that last yarn over, switch the yarn color.

This will make the ‘hat’ (the top of the stitch) the same colour as your current row and give you the new colour to work the next stitch (in the photo below you can see this in the ch 1 stitch at the end of the row).

  1. Thank you so much for sharing these clear pictures and easy to understand instructions. I’m an avid knitter slowly trying out crochet. It’s so much faster and there are so many “fun” things to crochet!
