This Vintage Scalloped Shawl is worked in an open scallop stitch that gives it a classic, vintage-inspired look and feel.

  • Yarn: Kismet Yarns Funky Stripes DK. DK Weight (Light Weight) [3] . 100 g (3.53 oz); 304 m (333 yds). 100% Plied Acrylic. 
  • Crochet Hook: 4.5 mm Clover Amour
  • Finished project used: Approximately 100 g / 1 skein / 333 yds
  • Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker.

Difficulty Level

  • Easy (Basic crochet stitches, simple shaping and finishing)

Finished Size

  • Approximate size of sample: 60 inches (152 cm) long.  

Gauge

  • Approximately in inches and rows in inches.

Not essential for this project. Use any Fingering weight yarn. Adjust the size easily by working more or fewer rows.

Vintage Scalloped Shawl

This project is worked widthwise in rows.

Using your 4.5 mm crochet hook, or size required for gauge:

R1: Ch 50, sk the first 5 chs (counts as 1 sc, 3 sk chs), scallop (*see special stitches) in the next ch, sk the next 3 chs, 1 sc in the next ch. *Sk the next 3 chs, scallop in the next ch, sk the next 3 chs, 1 sc in the next ch**. Work from * to ** across until 1 ch remains. 1 sc in the last ch. Turn. [7 sc, 6 scallops] 

R2: Ch 6 (counts as 1 dc, 1 ch3sp), sk the first sc. Sk all sts not mentioned. 1 sc in the center dc of the next scallop. ch 3. *1 dc in the next sc, ch 3, 1 sc in the center dc of the next scallop, ch 3**. Work across until you reach the last sc. 1 dc in the last sc. Turn. [6 sc, 7 dc, 12 ch3sp]

R3: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first dc, sk the next ch3sp, scallop in the next sc, sk the next ch3sp. *1 sc in the next dc, sk the next ch3sp, scallop in the next ch, sk the next ch3sp**. Work from * to ** across to the ch6sp. 1 sc in the third ch of the ch6sp. Turn. [7 sc, 6 scallops]

Rep R2 and R3 until your project measures approximately 60 inches (152 cm) long; or your desired project length.  

Proceed to finishing instructions.

How to Make this Project with Any Yarn and Hook

  1. Choose your favorite yarn and the hook indicated on the yarn label.
  2. Chain until your foundation chain measures the width you’d like for your project.
  3. Double check that the number of chains can be divided by 8 evenly, then add 2 extra chains.
  4. Follow the pattern as written until you have reached a length of approximately 60 inches (152 cm); or until you reach the length you’d like for your project.
  5. Follow the finishing instructions and you’re done!
