The Coral Wander Hat is crocheted from the bottom up in one piece. It features an easy 2-row repeat and uses simple stitches to create a light, cozy texture. You can make it more or less slouchy by adjusting the number of repeat rows.

This pattern includes sizes from Newborn to Adult (Large). It’s a relaxing project to make and pairs perfectly with the matching Coral Wander Scarf pattern.

Here’s what I used to make mine.

Yarn & Hook

Mary Maxim Starlette Worsted in Coral

I used Mary Maxim Starlette Worsted Weight yarn for this hat and a 5 mm (H) crochet hook. One skein is enough for the hat alone. If you’d like to make the matching scarf too, plan for two skeins total.

This yarn works up beautifully with simple stitches and gives the hat a soft, lightly textured finish.

  • Worsted Weight Yarn [4]
  • 100% Acrylic
  • Recommended hook size is 5 mm (US H-8)
  • Machine washable and dryable.
  • Shade: Coral [284.655]
  • Mary Maxim

See all the colors available in the Mary Maxim Starlette Worsted Yarn Collection here.

This hat is made in one piece, and here’s how it comes together.

Construction Notes

The Coral Wander Hat is worked from the bottom up, beginning with the brim and continuing in one piece.

  • The simple stitch pattern repeats every 2 rows.
  • The hat is designed to reach the base of the earlobe.
  • You can make it longer (slouchier) or shorter by adjusting the row count.
  • Seam the top to close the hat and weave in ends to finish.

Notes:

  • Multiple of 2
  • Turning chains (ch 1 and ch 2) do NOT count as stitches and we do not work into them. This means we work into the stitch at the base of the turning chain.
  • If you’d like to increase the hat height, work more repeat rows.

Finishing Instructions for All Coral Wander Hat Sizes

  • Finish off leaving a 10-inch tail of yarn for assembly.
  • Place your yarn tail on your yarn needle and weave it under the front loop of each remaining stitch at the top of the hat, pull to cinch close and tighten. Weave the end in on the inside of the hat securely before finishing off.
  • For help using my simple closing method to close the top of the hat, you can view the Photo tutorial, or the Video tutorial on YouTube.
  • Use the yarn end left at the beginning of the project to sew the hat band edges closed. I use a whipstitch technique to do this.
  • For help using a whipstitch to seam the hat band, please view my Whipstitch Photo tutorial, or the Video tutorial on YouTube.

FAQ

How much yarn do I need for the Coral Wander Hat?

One skein of Mary Maxim Starlette is enough for the hat. If you want to make the matching scarf too, plan for two skeins total.

How do I adjust the hat to make it slouchier?

Add a few extra repeat rows before decreasing or finishing the crown. This will increase the length without changing the width.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes. Choose any worsted weight yarn. Remember that yarn thickness and fiber content can slightly change the finished size and texture.

Does this pattern include beginner stitches?

Yes. It uses simple stitches and a 2-row repeat, making it easy to follow and memorize.
