Crocheters love these projects because they:

  • Work up quickly using small amounts of yarn.

Many makers enjoy crocheting angels as gifts, decorations, or keepsakes — and they’ve become a comforting tradition for remembrance and celebration alike.

Crochet a Beautiful Angel to Remember Loved Ones

Finished Size

  • 6.5 inches tall (not including the halo), 5.25 inches wide at the base of the skirt when flattened on a hard surface.

Not imperative but if your stitches have spaces between them that you can see through you need to go down a hook size (or two) until you are crocheting a more solid fabric.

  • Approximately 5 sts per inch and 5 rows per inch (measured at the bodice)

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Notes

  • This project is worked in continuous rounds.
  • You will need to use a stitch marker to keep track of your place.
  • Do not slip stitch to join at the end of rounds unless specified.
  • When a slip stitch is used to join at the end of a round, make the slip stitch tightly.
  • Do not work into slip stitches unless specified.
  • When you work the sc2tog decreases work under the front loop only (it makes the decrease stitch less thick).
  • Ch 1 at the end of the round does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.

Remembrance Angel Pattern

This project is crocheted from the top of the Angel’s head down to the base of the skirt, in one-piece. The wings, arm and halo are crocheted separately and assembled at the end of the project.

Angel Head

Using your 4 mm (G) hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in a DMR. [6 sc]

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. [12 sc]

Rnd 3: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]

Rnd 4: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [24 sc]

Rnd 9: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [12 sc]

Fill the head with Poly-Fil but do not overstuff.

Rnd 10: Sc2tog around. [6 sc]

Rnd 11: 1 FPsc in each st around. [6 FPsc]

Continue working from the head section without fastening off. You’ll now begin shaping the angel’s body directly below the head.

Angel Body

Rnd 12: 2 FPsc in each st around. [12 FPsc]

Rnd 13: 1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [14 sc]

Rnd 14: 1 sc in the first st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [10 sc, 2 ch3sp]

Rnd 15: 1 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 sc in the BL of each of the next 3 chs, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts [16 sc]

Rnd 16: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [20 sc]

Rnd 17-Rnd 20: 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [20 sc]

Keep crocheting from the last round of the body — do not cut your yarn. You’ll now start working the skirt to complete the angel’s shape.

Angel Skirt

Rnd 21: *3 hdc in the next st, sk the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [30 hdc]

Rnd 22: *1 hdc in the next st, 1 FPhdc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [20 hdc, 10 FPhdc]

Rnd 25-Rnd 27: Rep Rnd 24

Rnd 29: *1 sc in the next st, 1 tr in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [25 sc, 25 tr]

Rnd 30: 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to join, ch 1. [50 sc]

Rnd 31: 1 BPsc in each st around. Sl st to join. [50 BPsc]

Finish off and set aside until you have completed the arm, wings and halo.

Arm

Make 1

The arm is created in one piece; worked flat in rows and then seamed on the long edges with a slip stitch seam.

R1: Ch 26, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each rem ch across, ch 1, turn. [25 sc]

R2–R3: 1 sc in the bl of each st across, ch 1, turn. [25 sc]

  • Now we will fold the rectangle in half lengthwise and seam the long edges together using a slip stitch seam (or you can finish off and use a whipstitch seam to sew the two edges together).
  • Line up the stitches so you can work through both the rem loop of the foundation ch and the stitches of R3.

R4: 1 sl st in each st across. Finish off. [25 sl st]

Wings

Make 2

The wings begin with a DMR (double magic ring) but you can alternately begin with a chain 5, and then work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the fifth chain from the hook. The skipped 4 chains will count as your first double crochet. Then proceed to Row 2.

R1: In a DMR, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Turn. [5 dc, 1 ch2sp]

Tighten the initial double magic ring to close it.

R2: Ch 4 (counts as 1 tr) and 2 tr in the first dc, 2 dc in the next dc, 3 hdc in the ch2sp, 1 hdc in the next dc, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 dc. Ch 1, turn. [3 tr, 2 dc, 4 hdc, 2 sl st]

R3: Sk the first sl st, 1 sc in the next sl st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 hdc, 1 hdc in the next dc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 tr in the next tr, 1 dtr in the next tr (the ch-4 at the beg of R2). Ch 1, turn. [1 dtr, 2 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 5 sc]

R4: Ch 4, sk the first dtr, 1 sl st in the next tr. *Ch 4, 1 sl st in the next st**. Work from * to ** across making your last sl st in the first sc of R3. [10 ch4sp, 10 sl st]

  • Finish off.
  • Sew the wings in place.
Crochet this easy Remembrance Angel to bring comfort and peace. You only need 18 g of yarn — one skein makes 11 angels.

Halo

Crocheted with Bowdabra Bow Wire and a 4 mm (G) crochet hook. To make the halo chains tighter pull after each chain to tighten or use a 2.25 mm crochet hook.

What is Bowdabra Bow Wire? This is a thin piece of wire wrapped in gold metallic thread. I found mine at Michael’s in the ribbon section. It can stand on its own which is why I like it – and it is much thinner than pipe-cleaner (which was what I had been considering).

R1: Ch 20, finish off leaving a short 2-3 inch tail of the bow wire. [20 ch]

  • Now take the tail (at the end of the chain 20) and thread it through the 7th chain you made.
  • This will create the halo loop.
  • Now twist (like a twist-tie) the two remaining ends together to make it straight and stiff.
  • Take that one end (since you twisted them together you have one wire now) and thread it through the back of the angel’s head and down to the base of the neck before cutting off any of the excess wire.
  • If you want to dab a bit of fabric glue in there to keep it in place you can.

Finishing Instructions

  • Weave in any remaining ends securely.
  • Insert the arm through the holes on each side of the dress.
  • Insert the halo through the back stitches of the head. You can add a small amount of glue if you’d like to secure the halo in place.

Personalize Your Remembrance Angel ✨

You can easily customize your Remembrance Angel to make each one unique and meaningful.

  • Join the hands: Stitch the hands together to make your angel appear to be praying, or give her something special to hold.
  • Add hair: Embroider or crochet a few strands of yarn to create a soft hairstyle.
  • Make an ornament: Attach a ribbon above the wings to hang her on your tree, or stitch a small bell underneath her skirt.
  • Create a tree topper: Place a handmade paper or plastic cone under her skirt to help her stand securely on the top of your Christmas tree.
  • Decorate creatively: Add glitter, beads, sequins, or tiny flowers to give your angel a festive or personalized touch.
  • Light her up: Gently place a battery tea light or small bell beneath her skirt for a beautiful decorative effect.

Each angel can be as simple or as detailed as you like — a perfect way to remember loved ones or celebrate the season through crochet.
